VERY SPECIAL OLYMPIC GOLFERS

You will recall I stated in a previous newsletter that I had the pleasure of working with Special Olympics Team GB golf squad earlier in the year. A memorable day at St Andrews back in February followed by final preparations at Portal in June and with a further few reminders just before the team flew off to the 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Shanghai China. A very proud moment for each of them and their families as they step out to represent their country from a global platform.

Team Manager, Craig Martin, instilled a Ryder Cup style approach to coaching and it seems all the hard work and effort put in by the boys in to all aspects of their game, paid off handsomely as Team GB proudly returned with stunning stories of success.

Team GB Golf benefitted from the much needed support and sponsorship of The R&A, The European Tour, americangolf, Srixon, Williamgolfwear, Byte shoes, the London Golf Show, amongst others and I reach out to those sponsors in the hope their support may continue.

The focus on Special Olympics athletes from all sports is purely based on ABILITY, not disability. You will enjoy reading more about their World Games successes by going to www.sogb.org.uk and, hopefully, encouragement to want to get involved in what I firmly believe is a truly amazing movement.

A SCHOOL of THOUGHT

We have come around to that time of time of year again when a lot of touring professionals get to find out what kind of employment they are going to have for the next 12 months. Anxious looks at the Order of Merit and, if you are not in the magic top 115, the possible prospect of a visit back to the Qualifying School.

Or, for some, the opportunity of going toTour School for the first time and the possible riches that may or may not lie ahead of you.

One person who won’t be going to the Tour School is Rory McIllroy after his stunning performance at the Dunhill Links Championship which secured his playing rights for the next 12 months. I had the chance to see Rory at first hand at St Andrews when he played a practice round with Graeme McDowell who I was working with the week of the Dunhill. What a talent! But perhaps more importantly, what a great attitude to the game and the freedom of someone at peace with himself and his game.

The whole concept of ‘keeping your card’ is an interesting one and a notion that fills many with emotions ranging from mild unease to blind panic!

The only similarity in everyday life would be to have the prospect of redundancy hanging over your head in the workplace and the uncertainty that goes along with corporate upheaval. Many of you reading this article will at some point in their life have faced up to such an issue - and what happened?

I am pretty sure that in most cases you were probably pretty devastated by the news and then ….you got on with it. You DEALT WITH the situation. You showed resilience. At that point your career may have moved forwards or it may have moved back, but you will have showed resilience.

Could it be that the skill of resilience could be the ‘key’ mental game skill to develop?

The ability to know that whatever happens on the course, you have the tools at your disposal to DEAL WITH any outcome.

An interesting question to ponder is this:

Will the players who gain a Tour Card for next year be the players who hit the most good shots that week or will they be the players that dealt with their bad shots better than the others?

It may well be a bit of BOTH but what is for sure is that they will have MENTAL RESILIENCE.

BUILDING RESILIENCE

Believe it or not, building resilience is NOT about positive thinking. In fact, I would go as far as to say that positive thinking could actually be very detrimental to you as a golfer.

I have heard lots of people being VERY POSITIVE about how they are going to win on Tour and achieve great success only to end up with a series of dismal failures.

Being blindly optimistic and positive has become accepted as the ‘way to be’ in our culture and anybody with a negative attitude is frowned upon.

Yet, research by David McClelland at Harvard University over many many years and thousands of case studies showed that successful people who had actually ACHIEVED results in all walks of life, were NOT universal optimists and paragons of positivity, they showed a BALANCE of both positive and negative thinking as and when appropriate.

Fascinatingly, he summed up his life’s work on success by four KEY determining factors that were displayed by successful people.

They daydream about how they would feel reaching a certain goal.
They pick moderately challenging goals.
They engage in BOTH optimistic and negative thinking about how easy and difficult it will be to reach the goal. Plans include carefully monitoring their progress so they can make corrections if needed.
They seek advice from experienced people before making a commitment to achieve the goal.
SOON TO BE RELEASED.............NEW PRODUCT!!!!!!!!

Tools for developing resilience can be found in the soon to be released 7 cd series The MIND FACTOR PLAYERS PROGRAMME - GOLF

More tools and techniques for assisting memory are available in the Golf Brain series at www.golf-brain.com.
