DESERT
SWING
As the Desert Swing draws to a close and we see another
example of the incomparable genius that is Tiger Woods
close out yet another tournament, I began to think
what people will say about this man in fifty years
time? What will be his lasting legacy, as it is for
certain, that he has changed the game forever. No
player these days will possibly become the best player
that he can be without attending to the Technical,
Mental and Physical aspects of the game in the way
that Woods has done so diligently over the years.
I think that above all, in the future, people will
look back and say that we were incredibly fortunate
if we got to see this one off genius, such as the
way people talk about Don Bradman, Mohammed Ali and
Pele in their respective eras.

Another possible genius in the making
seems to be the young German star Martyn Kaymer who
has exploded onto the European scene with his win
in Abu Dhabi and his stunning 2nd place in Dubai.

It was also nice to see Graeme McDowell
have a top 5 finish in Dubai as he pushes towards
a Ryder Cup slot.
THE SEARCH
FOR ANSWERS
It seems we only need to glance at the
newspaper to see the latest ‘answer’ to
all of our daily problems be that EFT, Hypnosis, NLP,
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or whatever has ‘transformed’
the latest journalist.
In golf, we see over and over again
the new system be that ‘stack and tilt’,
natural golf or again whatever is hot and new. Is
there anything wrong in this?
Well, no, because all of the systems mentioned have
their merit with someone, somewhere at sometime!!
However, as human beings we do seem to crave THE
ANSWER!
The answer that will answer ALL
of our questions.
And for me, this is the problem, as this mindset puts
all of our faith in THE
SYSTEM rather than in ourselves. Has
hypnosis been useful in my work? Definitely! Does
it cure and fix everything? No! The same can be said
for all of the systems mentioned. For me, we need
to encourage ourselves and others to seek out applications
which can be personalized and can be owned by ourselves.
So that we look objectively at the world and set about
creating daily rituals and habits which are moving
US personally in the direction we want to go. If we
are not careful, we can develop a fixation with fixing!
Sometimes it is important to recognize that you have
had a bad day but you are on track! The short termism
which now plagues society has us constantly looking
for the next pill potion or fix.
With the 70 MIND FACTOR
coaches who attended the 4 day training
in Manchester in November 2007, I let all the attendees
know that as far as I was concerned, it was imperative
they took the information away from the course and
then APPLIED
it in the REAL WORLD
as opposed to applying for another course!! The results
that many who attended have reported back do strengthen
the need to APPLY
knowledge rather than gain more knowledge!
LEGENDARY
GOLF HOLES
This month the 3rd of our great holes
recommended by Terry Crawley is the majestic 17th
at Royal Lytham and St Annes.
A truly memorable par 4 that tests the
very best and is part of a brutal finish. At 467 yards
long, the landing area from the tee is particularly
small between a range of bunkers on the left and dense
scrub and bushes to the right. The hole turns left
towards an open green protected by bunkers on either
side. Keep an eye open for the plaque in one of the
bunkers to the left of the fairway - it commemorates
the famous second shot of Bobby Jones in the final
round of the 1926 Open which, when you see the shot,
he must have played and the equipment he would have
played it with - it will take your breath away!
BOOK
CLUB
SELLING by Gary May and Kevin Hogan

It may seem incredibly strange that
in a newsletter about building mental strength at
golf, I am recommending a book about selling! However,
I have always had the utmost respect for people who
go out each day and make their living in the world
of sales. From a mindset perspective, I think that
there are so many similarities with the game of golf
in terms of the need to deal with setback, the use
of rituals and routines and the essential aspect of
focus.
This book is brilliant because of the number of ways
you can ‘cross over’ the information to
any area of life. The authors of this book are all
at the ‘coal face’, so to speak, in having
to produce results in the REAL
WORLD just as golfers do.
There are a couple of Gary May's strategies on ‘Role
Projection’ that are priceless. Have a look
at it and see how you could take the information and
apply it to yourself on the course.
