OPEN and SHUT!!

What a great week it was at the Open! At times, the temperature got so hot you felt the ground was going to start melting but, in spite of the benign conditions, the course at Royal Liverpool stood proud to the scrutiny of being exposed to the best golfers in the world.

In Tiger Woods we are witnessing a true modern day phenomena.

This level of superlative achievement and ability places Woods in a very tiny, elite band of sportsmen and women who TRANSCEND their sport, a group so small that only the likes of Ali, Pele, Bradman and Nicklaus belong there.

Last week was a tremendous example of a man with a PLAN but more importantly a man who STUCK to his plan. A lot of ingredients have gone in to the making of this golfing genius, massive talent, incredible upbringing, sound technical game, and physical fitness.

How much does Tiger’s mental game impact on his performance?

I personally don’t know because all of the pieces are important. What I do know is that Tiger started to TRAIN his GOLF BRAIN from his early teens with the help of Jay Brunza. He started his mental training early.

Have you started yours?

NLP Practitioner, Master Practitioner and Diploma in Sports Hypnosis: November 2006: Central Manchester.

The opportunities to be involved in mental game coaching are growing stronger and stronger. In all sports, the recognition of the part that mental game training needs to play in effective athlete preparation is now firmly established. Mental game coaching has to be PRACTICAL and APPLICABLE as opposed to academic theory.

Train Your Putting Brain

Possibly the most ‘mental’ aspect to golf is rolling the ball into the cup. In terms of actual physical demands on your body and co-ordination, putting doesn’t rank too high. As the old saying goes ‘my grandmother could have holed that!’ and in many ways, she probably could - because physically the task is relatively easy. Ask you granny to pummel the ball three hundred yards off the tee, however, and we have a bit more of a problem!

Yet, in terms of the mind we have a completely different degree of difficulty. The greatest ball striker of all time, Ben Hogan, was driven to distraction by his inability to hole apparently simple putts.

That pressure filled task of rolling the ball into the hole on the last green, be that for the Open or to break 90 for the first time, affects us all.

But first, lets work backwards.
• I would like you to think of what you currently do on the putting green just before you go out to play a round of golf, that vital ten to twenty minute period of time that I consider crucial to the way that you will perform in the day ahead of you.
• I would like you to consider what this period of time is actually all about?
• What purpose does this exercise actually fulfil?
• Or, are you doing what we have often talked about and going through the same ritual as everybody else…just because everybody else does that!

For me the period of time that you spend on the green just prior to playing should fulfil two vital goals :
• Number One : you should leave the practice putting green with ENHANCED feel for the greens for that day, and
• Number Two : you should have increased your confidence in your ability to HOLE out from short range.
If you leave the putting green with those two goals fulfilled, then you have spent your time wisely.

But, is that what actually happens to you or have you just spent those vital minutes going through your normal INEFFECTIVE motions?
